25. Mind Spiders-Mind Spiders (Dirtnap)
Mark Ryan’s new project sounds a lot like his old band The Marked Men except a little dreamier/distorted, and a bit more 60’s pop friendly. Also look for a very unrecognizable Little Richard cover.
24. Mountain Man-Grief (Think Fast)
After the death of Last Lights singer Dominic Mallory, the surviving members formed Mountain Man. Then after a couple of well liked eps, the band goes full out with a concept album about the five stages of Grief and they play like they mean it. This record is less hardcore than it is therapy.
23. Everything we Left Behind-Our Ears are Bleeding (Self Released)
It’s good to see British bands finally figuring out skatepunk and hardcore. Sure, they invented streetpunk hardcore, but quality American style skatepunk has mostly eluded them. I think a lot of that stems from them getting their inspiration from older bands. Everything We Left Behind took some more modern inspiration. Particularly from NOFX, A Wilhelm Scream, and the Flatliners. Our Ears are Bleeding is the best of about 7 British skatepunk and hardcore records that came out this year that I felt were worthy of being in my top 50.
22. Goes Cube-In Tides and Drifts (The End)
A lot of people lump Goes Cube in with the majority of southern hardcore rock bands, but I feel they have more in common sonically with Swedish hardcore bands. Specifically Raised Fist and Final Exit. This band tries to do what it’s name describes. That is, break the comfortable dimensions that most hardcore music coasts on.
21. Bomb the Music Industry-Vacation (Earnest Jenning Record/Quote Unquote/Really)
Gaining popularity a few years ago as a one man band and later a fully backed spastic punk rock band, BTMI has always shown flashes of greatness. They have not made a perfect record just yet. Vacation is very good, and 4 or 5 songs on it are some of the best punk songs of the year, but I’d still like to hear what they can do when they aren’t screwing around and write a truly epic record
20. Frenzal Rhomb-Smoko At the Pet Food Factory (Fat Wreck Chords)
I ‘m always amazed when a band that I started listening to 15 years ago can still put out a kick ass record and make me miss that clean fat wreck sound of the mid 90’s. It also makes me feel like an idiot for completely ignoring their last 3 full lengths. I don’t think there will ever be another Australian punk band with such a solid catalog.
19. Tina Sparkle- Welcome to the No Fun House (Thinker Thought)
I’ve been posing a question to my friends lately-Will there ever be another Joan Jett? A hard rockin' female fronted band that can stand toe to toe with the greatest male fronted rock bands of the century? Sure Patti Smith had her day although most of the songs most people associate with her were covers (Gloria, My Generation, Rock and Roll Nigger). Even the song Because the Night was co written with Bruce Springsteen. Even a good portion of the songs that Joan Jett had early success with were covers (crimson and clover, do you wanna touch me, I love rock and roll). Not that any of this has anything to do with Tina Sparkles place on this list. I’m just posing the same question to you.
But if you ever looked for a more punk version of the Pretenders then check out Tina Sparkle.
18. Good Luck-Without Hesitation (No Idea)
A couple of years ago I gave Good Luck the number 3 spot on my “best of” list. Their new effort is not quite as good but I can’t figure out why. Perhaps it’s just not as big of a shock to the system. So if you have never heard Good Luck before now, this record may be much higher on your list. And nary will you find a girl who can belt out a song like Ginger Alford.

17. Dirty Filthy Mugs-Up in the Downs (DC Jams)
It’s nice to hear bands putting some effort in their Oi. Dirty Filthy Mugs features members of the Swingin Utters (who also put out a kick ass record this year). Pick this up if you like east coast Oi bands like Darkbuster or the Bruisers.
16. Iselia-Life From Dead Limbs (self released)
I always try to get a longer, doomier sounding record on my year end list. This year I figured the shoe-in would be the new record from Will Haven, but though it is a little on the unrefined side, Iselia’s new record Life From Dead Limbs came out of nowhere to steal it. Think of a better than average post Thursday screamo band mixed with Japan’s Envy and some Sigur Ros atmospherics. Get the guy who did the last Envy record to produce their next release and it could be one of the best screamo records of all time.
15. The Dwarves-Are Born Again (MDV)
For roughly the last 27 years the Dwarves have been the epidemy of sex, drugs, and violence in rock and roll. They will always be one of my very favorite bands. If you’ve never listened to them and want to remember what real “piss your parents off” punk sounds like, you can pick up any record they’ve ever put out. This record is again on par with anything they’ve ever done.
14. The Have Nots-Proud (Plastic and Paper)
The Have Nots have written the kind of record that Rancid no longer can: heartful, traditional, and without conceit.
13. Man Overboard-Man Overboard (Rise)
Man Overboard are the self proclaimed “Defenders of Pop Punk”. Not that that really matters. After someone’s already decided they’ve grown out of pop punk there’s very little that you to convince them that it’s still good. Man Overboard’s take on pop punk is just unapologetic, which is very refreshing. They write music that sounds like New Found Glory and Blink 182. Nuff said.
12. Amateur Party-Truncheons in the Manor (Rorschach)
I’ve been a big fan of Mike Mckee from his work with Armalite. Amateur Party is punk rock with reckless abandon. Most of these songs sound like they were written in a day and recorded just as fast. But that doesn’t limit the songs. It frees them. It lets them be what they are without intention, hesitation, or judgment.
11. Banner Pilot-Heart Beats Pacific (Fat Wreck Chords)
I say it every year. There will always be either a Banner Pilot of Off With Their Heads record on my list. Both bands have that Bouncing Souls Bass sound with driving rhythms and distinctive vocals. Both have never put out a bad full length.
10. Defeater-Empty Days and Sleepless Nights (Bridge Nine)
A few years back while I was watching Broadway Calls play a set at Warped tour, the lead singer asked the audience “Has anyone heard of Defeater? They’re the next band that’s going to do something in hardcore”. By god he was right. I’ve already written a lot about Defeaters as they were my number one record a couple of years back so let me just put it this way:
Imagine an angry, abused kid plants seeds and what grew around him was a band that would perfectly compliment AND antagonize him, helping him rip that abusive home apart.
9. P.S. Elliot-Sadie (Salinas)
I enjoy P.S. Elliot the same way I enjoy Cheap Girls (the band). It just sounds honest. Check out this if you want to hear emo/rock that sounds like pavement.
8. Moving Mountains-Waves (Triple Crown)
Originally I had written this record off because of the track lengths. On their previous release Foreword, most of the tracks ran well past the 5 minute mark. Waves rarely breaks 4. But they were on the lineup for Warped Tour and since I was there anyway I decided to check them out. Starting out with about a crowd of 30 watching them, they put on the best performance I’d see all day. When they were finishing up I looked around and saw that they had a crowd of about 400. These were just people who were walking by and got drawn in by their performance. The next day I threw Waves on for a serious listen.
7. Balance and Composure-Separation (No Sleep)
Last year I predicted that the first full length that Balance and Composure puts out could very well be my number one record of the year. Their first full length is not quite there but it stands high above any other full length emo records this year. Equal parts wimpy and powerful, Balance and Composure got their education from early 90’s emo bands such as Mineral and Sunny Day Real Estate. Check this out if you forgot what real emo sounds like.
6. Tenement-Napalm Dream (Hang Up)
The Only review I’ve read about this record said “Pop songs disguised as punk songs” which is a very accurate statement. I’m dying to see these guys live because I always compare them to the best of Minneapolis rock bands like Husker Du and the Replacements. Something I completely missed out on with my pre-teen record collection consisting entirely of Huey Lewis and Brian Adams records.
5. Pangea-Living Dummy (Lauren/Burger/Ol Factory)
My favorite garage record of the year. Though they’re form Los Angeles they have a lot of their sound in common with most of the stuff that GaGa records out of Ottawa has put out in the last few years. I imagine if Liam Gallagher had a kid who started a punk band it would be similar to this. That’s just my own imagination though. Don’t get any expectations out of that.
4. Candy Hearts-Everything’s Amazing and Nobody’s Happy (Kind of Like)
I’ve always had a thing for favorite babysitter vocals. Normally this spot would go to Lemuria, but I found Pebble to be rather boring. This record is just plain fun, female fronted pop punk
3. 12XU-Les Grande Marees (Purepain Sugar/Bakery Outlet/Flower of Courage)
The new record by 12XU sounds brash, impulsive, unrefined, and un-french. All things that I imagine the French government would be totally appalled by. That’s my kind of punk.
2. Junior Battles-Idle Ages (Paper and Plastic)
Idle Ages is a strange release. By that I mean it’s hard to really categorize it. It’s pop punk at it’s core but it sounds like they try their damndest to make it incomparable. The best I could do is compare it to eastern Canadian pop punk bands like the Dean Malenkos and Hope, both of which are tragically under-rated.
1. Fucked Up-David Comes to Life (Matador)
I really didn’t want o agree with SPIN magazine on this one. A couple of years ago when CJAM was changing it’s frequency, I suggested that the first song we play should be Crusades from Fucked Up’s first full length, not just because of how epic or how poignant the lyrics would have been, but also because I felt they were the most important band that we COULD play. A band that’s so effective and genre bending in what they do. A band that could never break into the mainstream no matter how popular they get because of their name alone. A band that makes punk important again.
Basically take every style of punk of the last 40 years (with the exception of maybe nu-metal), blend it together and turn it into a hardcore record. It’s all there. Punk, hardcore, classic, psychedelic, shoe gaze, metal, oi, etc.
Fucked up really went above and beyond this year with the release of a companion record called David’s Town sold only on record store day where the band takes on the persona of 11 different fictional bands of all different styles. Also Damien’s hosting on the wedge made it the only show on Much Music I’ve ever been interested in.
David Comes to Life actually made my hair stand up on end the first couple of times I listened to it.

I’m reminded of the way that the guitarist from Lightning Bolt switches one of his guitar strings with a banjo string so he can hit really intense notes. The Forecast is at their best when they work in the exact same way. Their front man is always singing med tempo and always sort of downplayed while their other singer (female) can hit really high and truly powerful notes. The Forecast has always been a band that I’ve liked but never loved. For every great song they write, they write 2 that are forgettable. Their new self-titled record is much more rounded than anything they’ve ever done and the Tom Petty influence is more apparent than ever.
24. BLACK BREATH-Heavy Breathing (SOUTHERN LORD)
There is only one question you have to ask when reviewing a thrash record: Does it rip?
This record does in fact rip. Your insurance company will not allow you to play this record in your house if your house is make of paper. Black Breath gained a large following with their demo 2 years ago. Being ex members of the band Skating Totally Rules, Everything Else Totally Sucks (s.t.r.e.e.t.s.) didn’t hurt either. Other members went on to form Pride Tiger and Bison BC. Both of which are doing well these days.
23. MONUMENT THE THIEVES-Monument to Thieves (NO SLEEP)
Any fans of the original singer of Throwdown out there? I lost my appetite for Throwdown when they switched singers and became your run of the mill tough guy hardcore band. The original singer spent some time playing guitar for 18 visions for a while. Now he’s back with that unmistakable voice playing the same style of hardcore that made Throwdown superstars in the first few years of their existence. I hereby decree that a new style of hardcore has been categorized: ChuggaFlemmy
22. GOLIWOG-Plague Allegiance (CHAINSAW)
First of all I have looked into it and they are not a racist band. For those of you who don’t know, Golliwog was a character from a book by Florence Kate Upton in the early 19th century. The character was turned into a popular doll and sold all over the commonwealth. Some people may remember one from an episode of Extras. The band Golliwog is from Slovenia and for a full disclaimer you can check out their myspace. Now that I have passed your questions/hate mail on to them I will tell you about their music. This record is great. Reminding me of the Fat Wreck Chords roster of the 90’s. They exemplify European pop punk. It’s fast and female fronted and that will always at least make me interested in listening to something.
21. DANGERS-Messy, Isn’t It (VITRIOL/CAPITAL GAMES)
If you ever asked the question “how vicious can a hardcore band…”!!! You’ve suddenly been punched in the face and sweep kicked by Dangers. I had two records to choose from this year with this level of vicious but felt I could only choose one. The other was Punch-Push /Pull which is also worth checking out. After I listened to them side to side, Dangers came out the victor. I picture their shows looking like Conan the Barbarian as drawn by Frank Frazetta wildly swinging an axe at enemies crawling up a pile of bodies to reach him.
20. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS-In Desolation (EPITAPH)
I am convinced that for at least the next 5 years I will include either a Banner Pilot or Off With Their Heads record on my best of list. OWTH have always reminded my of the Bouncing Souls without ever really sounding like them. Bassy, bombastic and fun to sing along to.
19. GREAT ST LOUIS-In Your Own Time (JUST SAY NO TO GOVERNMENT MUSIC)
Out of all the Leatherface inspired bands currently out there today, I’ve always felt The Great St Louis was the most under appreciated. Maybe because they’re from the UK where Leatherface is already king. I would suggest picking up this record if you prefer a more stripped down Lucero mixed with the Gaslight Anthem without any of the Against Me.
18. RVIVR-LP (RUMBLETOWNE)
RVIVR is an ex Latterman band which is always a good reason to check out a band. But the real revelation here is the female singer Erica(something). She makes this record. Otherwise this would just sound like any other ex Latterman band (sounds like latterman but not quite as good). She provides the accent that all of Matt Canino’s other projects have lacked.
17. STATE LOTTERY-When the Night Comes (SALINAS)
State Lottery sometimes sounds like a perfect cross between the Lawrence Arms and Saturday Looks Good to Me. This is a perfect fusion between folk and punk and better than anything your Fake Problems has ever put out. They are also sorta local.
16. GLASSES-The Ills of Life (VENDETTA)
If you want to hear the best Nirvana cover of all time then pick up this record (hint: it’s retitled). Any fans of The Swarm out there? You are now legally obligated to listen to this.
15. CRIME IN STEREO-I Was Trying To Describe You to Someone (BRIDGE 9)
Well, they’re finally dead. After years of teasing fans with a break-up (kinda like Zao used to do), Crime in stereo have finally thrown in the towel, But not before releasing 2 of the best post hardcore records of the decade. Anyone who is into Brand New’s less emo work will probably enjoy this record a lot. Check out pastepunk.com for a better review. I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone is difficult to describe to someone.
14. MASSHYSTERIE-Masshysterie (NYVAG)
Sweden is the grand canyon of punk. Their musical influences have cut the into the country as deep as the Colorado River. The Clash, Negative Approach, Nation of Ulysses and Little Richard influences are all overtly apparent across the Swedish music scene and in response I will now state that if I was to move to a different country based on music alone, it would be Sweden. All blowjobs aside, a lot of people compare them to early punk acts like the Avengers, the Mutants, or X. I see them as more of a Swedish Matt and Kim. Their guitars are so jangly and fun, a lot of times I totally forget that they’re a full band. They’re also one of the only bands from Sweden I’m aware of that actually sings in Swedish. Features ex members of (International) Noise Conspiracy, Regulations and many others.
13. GAMITS-Parts (PAPER AND PLASTIC)
It is agreed upon that the Gamits have always been one of the best pop punk bands of the past 10 years. When they broke up a few years ago, I felt it was a loss but not a great one. I enjoyed their records but never felt they’d added too much to the style. Then after a few years they return with a mindblowingly great record. It almost makes me wonder if they faked a break-up so people wouldn’t bother them while they created their masterpiece. Parts is soulful punk in a way that I haven’t heard since One Man Army broke up.
12. FLATLINERS-Cavalcade (FAT WRECK)
Melodic, emotive and vicious. The Flatliners improve in leaps from record to record. From Skapunk band, to straight ahead melodic punk band, to whatever the hell style of punk music this is….band. One more record and they may just beat Against Me at their own game. If this was 1998 they would be selling out headlining gigs in the middle of winter in downtown Detroit.
11. 500 MILES TO MEMPHIS-We’ve built up to nothing (DEEP ELM)
Please don’t dismiss this band within the first 2 minutes of listening to them. It’s different. Very different. The best way that I can describe them is by calling them Emobilly. This record truly embraces country music and retains a punk sensibility that no band has ever been able to do before, epically.
10. RUMSPRINGER-Empty Towers (TRAFFIC STREET)
There are two Rumspringer bands and neither is a ska band from Delaware. One is a duo from Los Angeles spelled Rumspringa. The other is this band, Rumspringer, from Tempe Arizona. If the 2 had a band battle like in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Rumspringa's totem would be a piece of driftwood. Rumspringer’s battle totem would be a Chimp with a crowbar. What I’m getting at is they have that childlike innocence and desire to have fun but at the same time have a crowbar that they use to hammer catchy powerful songs directly into your subconscious. Songs that I am constantly singing to pick myself up in moments of boredom. Oh, and the chimp wins the battle. He has a crowbar after all.
9. CONTINUANCE-Carry Ourselves (RISE)
For as many words that I could understand on this record, the singer may as well be an accordion. In this case that isn’t a bad thing. Rarely do I care what a band is singing about more than the way the song sounds. This is one of the most intense and urgent sounding hardcore records I have ever heard. Fast and layered melodies with shredding intensities (didn’t that used to be a show on CJAM?) that the singers incomprehensible voice only accentuate. The best Canadian release this year.
8. BALANCE AND COMPOSURE/TIGERS JAW-split (NO SLEEP)
There is nothing wrong with Tigers Jaw. Previous to this release I was not a fan. I just didn’t like their sound. Nothing wrong with that. On this release they have certainly improved in melody and production. If you like them on this split I would suggest picking up their new full length also out this year, Two Worlds, which is also good.
The main reason this split is on my list is because of Balance and Composure. Balance and Composure is the band of the future. The saviours of emo if you will. While most emo bands these days are obsessed with experimenting and finding a new sound that will set them apart, B&C have looked to the past for inspiration. Most notable early to mid ninety emo bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral with maybe a touch of Texas is the Reason for that Revelation edge. They do it better than anybody out there today. If they release a full length I have no doubt that it would be in the running for record of the year. After 3 releases this is the closest thing they’ve come to a full length.
7. BARS OF GOLD-of gold (FRICTION)
Bars of Gold comes from the remnants of Bear vs. Shark. You can certainly hear it. But with their experience and a newfound swagger you can also hear a desire to experiment with a firmly established post hardcore sound. This may possibly be Michigan’s best current band.
6. Blake-I Was Young In the 90s (NO REASON)
Everyone I play this for is instantly put off by the singer’s vocals. For those of you familiar with Revelation records roster in the 90’s will quickly compare them to The Farside albeit with a thick Italian accent. This mimicry is proven when I went to their myspace and found that their number 1 friend is a Farside fan page. If you can embrace the vocals on this record you will find extremely well constructed and deep sounding songs. For me the vocals only made them stand out from the crowd. There are few records I listened to more this year.
5. ENVY-Recitation (TEMPORARY RESIDENCE)
Envy is the Radiohead of Screamo. If Envy played a show with Radiohead and Sigur Ros, the moon would weep, inseminating the earth and birthing a race of beings made of pure energy. The beings would immediately fly to the brightest nebula in the universe and create an Eden of harmonic musical perfection. Balls.
4. PRIZZY PRIZZY PLEASE-Chroma Cannon (JOYFUL NOISE)
I just can’t pick out a guitar riff on this entire record. There are certainly guitars, but they’re played more like spastic keyboards…with saxophones. Prizzy’s previous records featured short, fast experimental songs that seem to have an idea but never grow. Not unlike Bomb the Music Industry. On Chroma Cannon, the track lengths are tripled, giving them lots of time for their ideas to bloom into full-on musical experiences. Listening will make you cooler while driving down the road. Remember to blast it at stoplights.
3. CEREMONY-Rohnert Park (BRIDGE 9)
Nothing makes me happier when a decent but run of the mill hardcore band walks through a dark alley and walks out the other side covered with blood and a look in it’s eyes that says “I will kill again”. Rohnert park is a dark, vicious, funhouse of hardcore.
2. BE MY DOPPELGANGER-no composure (IT’S ALIVE)
Easily the best pop punk record of the year. It reminds me of bands I listened to in high school. It reminds me of being in high school. It reminds me of making out with a girl for the first time and then seeing her in the hall the next day and not saying anything but you can’t help but smile and wink at each other as you pass. This is basically the soundtrack to being a punk in a small town high school with songs about drinkin beers and girls you are aware there is no future with.
1. TITUS ANDRONICUS-The Monitor (XL)
My favourite album every year tends to be the one that makes my hair stand up on end. The Battle of Hampton Road, the 14 minute long final song of the Monitor makes my hair stand up at three different points. This record has been much talked about in concept and greatness and I don’t feel like I can really say anything original, so I’m going to use my favourite quote about this record. It comes from pitchfork.com who listed this record at number ten on their best of list. I’m not really a fan of pitchfork but this is probably the most accurate thing I’ve ever read about this record: “Frontbeard Patrick Stickles bellows every lyric in a scraggly yowl, sounding like the world is crumbling around him and the only thing holding the sky up is the righteous noise from the band behind him”.

25. Punch-Punch : a late addition to the list. This could have been the new Striver records slot but this was much more vicious. It also plays with the thrashy hardcore sound more than your average band.
24. Her Breath on Glass-We Aimed Straight Down : really reminds me why I loved basement screamo in the earlier part of the decade. This is 1 part new recordings and 1 part live show. Best screamo record of the year.
23. Heartsounds- Until We Surrender : Former members of Light This City realize they’re a mediocre metal band and decide to do what they’re good at: writing fast, catchy, poppy hardcore. The girls voice also reminds me of Genevieve from Fifth Hour Hero.
22. Banner Pilot-Collapser : what this band has lost in speed, they have more than made up for with density (still fast though). I love that heavy base guitar sound that Banner Pilot and Off With Their Heads have almost patented at this point.
21. Thursday-Common Existence : I don’t think Thursday will ever again reach the greatness of Full Collapse, but this record goes into some very interesting directions. Case in point, download the song circuits in fever. It’s one of the best songs of the year and I would be thrilled if their next record was full of songs like it.
20. The Casting Out-go crazy, throw fireworks : This is the band Nathen Grey always should have fronted. I was privy to this one in November of 08 but it didn’t have a real release until 2009. Way better than Boy Sets Fire.
19. Prize Country-With Love : Excellent post hardcore. Think early Helmet mixed with later Snapcase and some Quicksand to garnish. Unfortunately all of the songs kind of run together. Otherwise it would be higher on the list.
18. Carry the Torch : A Tribute to Kid Dynamite : one of my favorite tribute records of all time. Most of the bands play it pretty straight, which I’d rather hear than a bunch of bands playing badly rearranged covers. The bands that do experiment a bit do really well. Especially Comadre and To the Lions. It also covers almost their entire discography.
17. Cheap Girls-My roaring 20’s : This is what emo should be. Fat ugly white guys singing slow songs about lost love and getting drunk. The second best emo record of the year.
16. Teenage Bottlerocket-They Came From the Shadows : driving Ramones style (and dare I say Ramones surpassing) punk rock and roll. This is a solid record the whole way through. They should just name their next record Catchy/Fast.
15. Marked Men-Ghosts : Simple but complex driving punk. I would live to see this band live. I’d imagine their fingers bleed they play with so much passion. I was worried that people would have forgotten this one on their best of lists since it came out so early in the year, but it has been well represented on all the punk review sites. Every time I listen to this I’m able to pick out another small nuance in the production that I like.
14. Propagandhi-Supporting Caste : It’s impossible to say you hate a propagandhi record. So I will only say I was disappointed by Potemkin City Limits. I’m not even sure why. Supporting Caste however is a return to form. That form being the head of Cthulu. That what I imagine their music would look like if it took form and started ravaging government buildings.
13. Wisdom in Chains-Everything You Know : You have to love an band that doesn’t have to remind you of how hard they are. You already know they’re hard. So they write songs about dogs and bullies, keeping the fun in tough guy hardcore.
12. Evening Rig-Is doin stuff : A perfect blend of Lucero, Limbeck, Replacements and Gin blossoms. There is not a music fan alive that can’t admit to loving two out of four of those. The others you have probably never heard.
11. Broadway Calls-Good News, Bad Views : If you’re an older guy like me, in 94 Greenday’s Dookie hit the airwaves so hard it changed my taste in music forever. The next month they played Joe Louis area for $10 tickets. I tried like hell so get some but they sold out in 7 minutes. I always imagine that seeing Greenday in a basement in the Kerplunk era would be similar to a Broadway Calls show. Basically I’m comparing Broadway Calls to early Greenday. So check them out in a small venue while you can. They have to potential to get huge.
10. Converge-Axe to Fall : Every time a Converge record comes out you don’t have to hope that it’s good. You just have to listen to it and get your mind blown by a sound more innovative than any other hardcore band has and will ever come up with.
9. C.Aarme-World Music : This was really hard to come by and I would not compile my list until I’d heard it. Almost dancy post everything. If I compared it to another band I’d be doing them an injustice. If you need some convincing before you seek it out than I just need to tell you they’re Swedish. And everyone knows all the best bands come from Sweden.
8. Lewd Acts-Black Eyes Blue : Suddenly these guys have become the hardcore band you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. This record is dark, angry and unpredictable. I feel a lot of influence from Cursed on this one.
7. Failures Union-In What Way : The best emo record of the year. It’s sad and fun at the same time. They are very similar to Cheap Girls in most ways except that their songs sound more important.
6. Burnt by the Sun-Heart of Darkness : In my opinion there is no band heavier than Burnt by the Sun. A return to form after the disappointing and experimental The Perfect is the Enemy of The Good. This is what every metal core band should strive to be, instead of trying to sound like every band on roadrunner.
5. Last Lights-No Past, No Present, No Future : This band was so pissed the singers head exploded. Literally. Of a brain aneurism after a show. I have a feeling this band could have had the same following that American Nightmare had in 2001. A really sad ending to a band with more potential for legendary hardcore status than 95% of new hardcore bands out there today. Also check out the other members new band Mountain Man. It’s in the same vein.
4. Hit the Switch-Observing Infinities : This band was royally screwed over by nitro records. They signed to the label right before the label decided to stop releasing records. Instead of hooking them up with another label they just released it for free online. This is their new record however. And it’s angry. It’s fast. It doesn’t take any shit. I would say if you miss the early day’s of Hopeless records, then this record is for you.
3. The Shook Ones-Unquotable AHM : The Shook Ones will always be compared to Kid Dynamite with good reason. And they’re unapologetic about it. On their new record they carve out their own path. Writing songs as good as Kid Dynamite ever did that are distinctly their own. If they toured full time they might one day be seen as the better band in the eyes of the punk rock gods.
2. Polar Bear Club-Chasing Hamburg : This was a toughie. I kept switching my number one release right up until I did my best of show. So you can almost say it’s half of the best record of the year. I love what the singer has been doing with his vocals. He runs from smooth melodic to deep gruff and back to a melodic harmony that gives me chills. No matter what style of music you’re into you should love this record
1. Set Your Goals-This Will Be the Death of Us : This is Set Your Goals’ Thicker Than Water. It won’t be remembered as their best release since their first record was also amazing, but they really upped everything: The speed, the melody, the bite (thanks to the members of Smartbomb they picked up). The songs really sound like they have importance to the world of hardcore. Also some really great guest spots. So sure Mutiny is the revelation and it will always have a place in my heart but This Will Be the Death of Us will never leave my car.
